    Health Advice for International Travel

    Attendees of this presentation should be able to:

    • Analyze a travel itinerary for potential health risks.
    • Prescribe appropriate vaccines and medications for international travel. Specific areas to be covered include:
      • Pre-travel, Immunizations, Malaria prophylaxis, Medications, Travel safety on planes and boats, During travel, Safe food and water, Traveler’s diarrhea, HIV and travel,
    • Pregnancy, breast feeding and travel.

    Fever of Unknown Origin

    Attendees of this presentation should be able to:

    • Discuss the pathogenesis of fever and its physiologic importance.
    • Describe the major causes of FUO’s.
    • Integrate normal temperature regulation and the relevance of this to disease states.
    • Formulate an approach to FUO for a given patient based upon the multicenter and expert panel reviews published and referenced.

    Gastroenteritis

    Attendees of this presentation will be able to:

    • Relate the major pathogenic mechanisms that result in diarrhea.
    • Differentiate the major pathogens responsible for acute gastroenteritis.
    • Utilize an efficient approach in the evaluation of a patient with acute gastroenteritis as the normal host and in persons with HIV or recent travel.
    • Diagnose and treat various common causes of gastroenteritis as per the current ACG guidelines.
    • Apply an approach to the treatment and follow up of these infections for each type of at-risk patient.

    Update in Antibiotic Therapy

    Attendees of this presentation will be able to:

    • Appraise the pharmacology and antibacterial spectrum of activity of the newer antibiotics.
    • Assess the indications for use of newer agents based on sites of infection and susceptibility patterns and apply the appropriate drug recommendation to key clinical scenarios as per the IDSA guidelines.
    • Relate the side effects, adverse reactions and important drug-drug interactions affiliated with each antibiotic.
