Do Residents Need CME Credits?

By March 24, 2025CME Activities

You may have heard about continuing medical education (CME) credits during residency. But do residents need CME credits? Isn’t residency a type of education, anyway?

Whether you’re in school or nearing the end of residency, it’s time to prepare for CME expectations. Read on to learn when to earn CME credits, how it works for residents, and other pertinent information.

No CME Requirements for Residents—But You Can Earn Them

Residents are not required to earn CME credits because the residency program is educational. CME requirements begin after a professional is licensed and certified.

However, residents can receive credits for Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredited programs. Residents and fellows can earn up to 20 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™ for each year of the program.

To earn CME credits for completing residency or fellowship, you’ll need to apply via the AMA. You must include proof of completion. The application is free for AMA members. Otherwise, there is a $100 fee.

You may also receive CME credit for residency and fellowship for the American Board of Family Medicine.

When You Need to Start Earning CME Credits

While residents don’t need CME, thinking about it early can help you know what to do when it’s time. Whether you’re a new resident curious about CME or this is your first year on the job, here are essential things to note:

  • Most state medical boards require CME to maintain licensure. You may also have CME requirements from employers and professional associations.
  • Standard CME formats include live events, medical journals, point-of-care learning, and self-study activities.
  • For CME credits to count, you must receive them through Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) accredited providers or state medical societies.
  • Topics range from industry advancements to practice management, leadership, and clinical skills.

CME helps healthcare professionals enhance their skills, learn what’s new in the field, and find methods for better patient care. With options for everyone—from in-person events to webinars to on-demand content—CME conferences are one of the best ways to get started!
